Neurodiversity Celebration Week at Belmont

Last week was Neurodiversity Celebration Week. This is a worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences. This week aims to increase our understanding of those with neurodiverse minds and celebrate their talents.

At Belmont, we focused on the benefits or ‘superpowers’ of having a unique and creative brain. Our pupils enjoyed an assembly where they learnt about what it means to be neurodiverse, the importance of embracing all kinds of different minds and how thinking differently from others allows individuals to come up with unique ideas and solutions that others may not.

Pupils were also shown examples of individuals who attribute their success to their neurodiversity. For example, Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock MBE is a well-known space scientist and science educator who said: “My dyslexia thinking means I don’t just think outside the box…I think outside the planet.”

This week was a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to gain a deeper insight into neurodiversity and celebrate the strengths of those with learning differences. At Belmont, we recognise the many talents that come with being neurodivergent. As a school, we aim to encourage more inclusive cultures that celebrate differences and empower every individual.
