Spring Shines on the Five/Ten Mile Cup 2022

On Monday 28th March, Mill Hill School held the annual Five/Ten Mile Cup race; a tradition that has continued for more than ten years. It is essentially a cross country relay in which houses compete for house pride and beating previous course records. It is certainly one of the most anticipated events in the Mill School Calendar.

We were fortunate enough to have the ideal conditions for this fantastic event: a bright, spring sunshine; little wind; contestants who were poised to start the race; and keen spectators ready to support and cheer their houses.

The event began with Mrs Sanchez (Head, Mill Hill School) leading a one-minute silence as a mark of respect for all those affected by the conflict in Ukraine and surrounding countries. During the event, Mill Hill School Charity and Eco Society held a cake sale, raising an incredible £406 for the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC).

The glorious and bright weather lifted everyone’s spirits and brought a real sense of excitement to the event. Both staff and pupils participating in the race were cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd, made up of most of the school. Mr Bowes-Taylor (Teacher of Biology, Mill Hill School) led a ‘mass warm-up’ followed by the traditional House mascot race, as Charlie (Fourth Form, Murray) kept the crowd entertained on the music decks.

Congratulations are due to McClure House who won the 5 Mile Cup and Atkinson who won (once again) the 10 Mile Cup. The overall 5/10 Mile Cup was a tight affair and came down to the last lap, with the final runners sprinting over the line resulting in Atkinson winning the combined trophy by only 9 seconds over Murray. This is a continuation of amazing victories for the Atkinson boys who have now won eight times in the past nine years.

We congratulate all participants and thank the many staff involved in setting up and marshalling such a large-scale event. We also thank our amazing Videography Society for capturing the special moments in the event. Keep an eye out for the video which will be published in the coming weeks on our socials.
