This week in Year 2…

The children arrived in school to see that the school environment has changed to complement our theme – Treasures of the Deep! They were amazed with the transformation and took time to discuss our first impressions of the classroom whilst creating picture collages on Seesaw. Some impressions from the children included-

“When I walked in, I thought the classroom was beautiful! I thought I was under the deep, blue sea!”

“I stood under the shiny, hanging fish, it made me wonder where I was!”

“The beautiful, blue ocean on the walls, made me want to swim with the sea creatures!”

We discovered a message left on a bottle in our classrooms which led us on a treasure hunt. At each new clue, we had to solve a riddle which led us to the next location. After a long walk, we finally found a treasure chest left for us!” The chest contained a variety of under the sea artefacts including aqua shoes, waterproof camera, snorkel, towel, diving rods and a which sparked the children interest. They used their inference skills to deduce what the items were, what they are used for and who left them.

We welcomed ‘Diver Dean’ into school and were incredibly lucky to hear all about diving in the big, blue sea. The children asked him a variety of questions about diving, and we discussed the equipment used for diving whilst understanding the uses. The children labelled his diving equipment, discussed the uses of each piece, and uploaded to Seesaw.

This week, the children arrived to find a wrapped-up book from Diver Dean – our new focus text! Using only the title on the front cover, the children had to use their inference skills to determine who they thought ‘Manfish’ was and what he looked like. This led us to learn about, Jacques Cousteau. Questions we asked included;

Who is Jacques Cousteau?

Why is he famous?

What did he invent? Why?

How did his invention change life for humans? 

What has his invention enabled us to explore?

How does the aqua lung help us even today?

Why is so much of the sea unexplored still today?
