On Tuesday we were visited by Army Veteran, Derek Derenalagi as part of the lead up to Remembrance Day. Derek served in the British Army until he suffered life changing injuries whilst on tour in Afghanistan in 2007. As well as being a double amputee, Derek is also a top-class discus thrower, competing at the London 2012 Paralympics and in the first Invictus Games.
Derek shared his story in Lower School Chapel and our pupils asked questions about Army life, the roadside bomb that changed his life and what it what it was like to meet the Royals! Derek also had ‘Tea and Toast’ with some of our Year 6 pupils who shared with Derek their own stories when conflict and war had touched the lives of their own families.
Derek is a ambassador for ‘Help for Heroes’ and helps to raise awareness and funds for this charity that supports British Service personnel to live well after service.
