Last night several of our Upper Sixth pupils attended a Legal Networking event organised by the Old Millhillians Club. The guest speaker at the event was John Gallagher, former president of the Old Millhillians Club, a distinguished lawyer and High Court Judge.
Since leaving Mill Hill School, John completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics and Theology at Kings College London, before being called to the Bar in 1974. Throughout his legal career, John has gained a variety of legal skills and experience. He has built an extensive legal practice including diverse areas such as clinical negligence, professional indemnity insurance, ecclesiastical law, gun licensing law and sports law. John is currently Crown Court Recorder, Chancellor of the Diocese of Rochester and Deputy Chancellor of Chelmsford.
John gave an interesting presentation where he discussed his experience overseeing cases as a Judge and the requirements of Law in the 21st century. He explored a variety of topics such as whether the general public has sufficient access to legal representation and if the current sentencing and parole policies ‘make sense’. John finished by answering questions from members of the audience, which included both our pupils and Old Millhillians.
This was a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to network, hear a stimulating talk and gain a deeper insight into a legal career. Mill Hill School pupils automatically become members of the Old Millhillians Club after leaving the School, giving them access to various events and activities. Next week the Old Millhillians Club are hosting a Creative Arts Networking Event.
