This week in Year 1…

This week we continued our journey into space and delved deeper into the book The Way Back Home by Oliver Jeffers.

In Literacy, we practised our understanding of story structure by retelling the story on Seesaw and adding a few of our own illustrations.

In PHSE/Literacy we talked about the Martian and the boy’s developing friendship and discussed what we would do in a similar situation. We then had fun acting and filming each other as the two characters meeting for the first time, what would we say, how would we act, what would our facial expressions be?

In Science, we read facts about the moon and discussed in pairs which were true or false and which could be true.

In Phonics, we have revised the sound ai (rain) and learnt the alternative spelling ay (pay and stay). The children learnt to recognise and spell words containing these digraphs. We also learnt the silent e that goes on the end of some words that end in the sound s, for example horse and mouse.

In Maths, we learnt about equality and balance and how a whole number can be calculated in a variety of ways; for example, 3 + 2 = 5 and 3 + 1 + 1 = 5. This helped secure their understanding that = means the same as or balanced. We also practised our number bonds to ten.

We were lucky to have our amazing Art specialist in this week helping the children to create wonderful space themed 3D artwork.

We also celebrated Chinese New Year by completing some craft activities.
