Music Update

The Music Department held the second Scholars’ Concert of the academic year at the start of the Spring Term. Many of our scholars performed music that they have been working on recently and the level of ability on display was impressive. We heard a wide variety of music in the programme covering a range of eras from Bach through to Romantic and Jazz music. To cap off the concert, Charlie A presented us with thrilling live looping performance of his remix of Toto’s Africa. Scholars’ concerts are programmed every term and provide our award holders with the opportunity to perform in a formal setting. Alongside their dedication to ensembles, it is tremendous to see their rapid personal progression brought forth by their dedication. Of course, a huge thanks must go to our Visiting Music Teachers whose work behind the scenes helps our pupils thrive in their particular disciplines.

This half term also saw a visit from Alice Martin (soprano) and Dominika Blatt (piano) who presented a varied programme including numbers from Handel, via the Strausses, all the way to modern musical theatre. Alice is known for her animated and engaging performances, and currently works as a Music Graduate Assistant at RGS, teaching singing, flute, and piano. A versatile Hungarian pianist, Dominika graduated from the master’s programme at the Franz Liszt Academy (Budapest) in 2018 and has broad experience across many genres, styles, and eras.

We were delighted to tie this spectacular vocal concert into our second major competition of the year, the Farrow Singing Prize, which is always a highlight of the Music School calendar. Over 120 vocal performances were given by our pupils over the two-week festival, impressing our professional adjudicators who commented on the hard work, commitment, passion that had gone into each and every performance. Congratulations must go to this year’s overall Farrow Prize winner Yassin A-Z, and the Helmore Prize winner Joshua G. A recording of the whole event is available on the school YouTube channel. Thank you to all the staff who have worked tirelessly this term to make such a special event.

It is always a pleasure to have the Parents and OMs Choral Society back in rehearsal. We’ll be rehearsing every Tuesday in the Spring Term from 7.00 to 9.00pm in preparation for our McClure Concert on Thursday 16 March 2023. If you are interested in taking part, please email music@millhill.org.uk.
