Trip to Aachen

The German Department was very happy to organise its first trip abroad in a few years. Our destination was Aachen and 16 pupils from the GCSE and A Level cohorts signed up to visit this beautiful city. The Eurostar and Intercity Express train proved very efficient modes of transport and after an early start, we arrived at lunchtime and we headed straight for the lively Christmas Market, located in the old town. The setting of the market around the streets of the stunning cathedral, along with its countless stalls, made this a most special experience. The pupils sampled all sorts of German specialities, including the delicious Aachen Christmas biscuits called Printen. Another highlight of the trip was visiting a local school, where the pupils had the chance to experience a day in the life of a German pupil. They took part in lessons and made friends. We are very excited to be able to reciprocate the school’s hospitality by welcoming a number of their pupils along with the teachers in June.

It was a pleasure to spend time with our pupils outside of school and they have brought a renewed enthusiasm for the language back into the Mill Hill classroom. My thanks to Mrs Knowles-Barron and Mr De Sousa for helping make this trip run so smoothly.
