This week in Year 1…

This week in Literacy we have been reading the book ‘Meet the Planets’ by Caryl Hart. In the book a girl and her dog go into space and travel around meeting the planets and learning all about each planet in the solar system. We also looked at other sources of information about planets, watched videos, and looked in books and on the internet. The children then chose their favourite planet to research in more detail using iPads, books and information sheets. They then chose a way to present the information they had learnt in a pamphlet, poster or fact sheet.

In Science, we have continued to observe the caterpillars. They are now much fatter and have made their way up to the lid of the pot to get ready to hang and become chrysalises. The sunflower seeds are busy working away under the soil, so there is nothing to see yet, however, we are keeping them moist and in the daylight.

We have also been busy recycling paper/card and fruit/vegetables!

In Maths, we have been learning about measures- comparing length, height, mass and speed. We have been using comparative language in the context of length and height using strips of paper and comparing them to objects around the classroom. We have been comparing the weight of objects with a partner and then sequencing them from lightest to heaviest and using the pan balance scales to compare mass.
