A Day at the Wimbledon Championships

Eight Millhillians had a wonderful day yesterday visiting the All England Club, Wimbledon, for Day 4 four of the Championships. Blessed with fine weather, the pupils had the opportunity to meet former All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club President and Old Millhillian Tim Phillips (Winterstoke House) and were invited onto the iconic Centre Court at ground level.

Tim spoke about the history of the Club, his experience of playing in three Grand Slams and some of the technicalities about the Center Court sliding roof, hawkeye and Rufus the pigeon scarer! Pupils could sit and savour the beauty of undoubtedly the most famous Tennis court in the world, pre-afternoon play commencing. Tim also shared a moment with our current junior winners of the Shield event, Lucia T O (Winfield House) and Max R (Murray House).

With Number One court tickets, pupils then experienced two exciting Men’s and Ladies’ singles games, including the amazing comeback of Croatian Donna Vekic, who was a set and 2-5 down against previous grand slam winner Sloane Stephens of the USA. Pupils were inspired by Vekic’s grit and determination never to give up.

As well as enjoying the customary strawberries and cream, pupils managed to secure player autographs and photos on the courtside, have a wander around the outside and practice courts, and even bumped into Old Millhillian Florence Kay, who was working at the Championships!

All had an amazing day at a very special venue.
