Independent Schools Tennis Championships!

Congratulations to Max R (Murray House) and Guy L (Priestley House) on their outstanding achievement in reaching the Quarter Finals of the U15 Thomas Bowl event at the Independent Schools Tennis Championships over the weekend.

The boy’s competition began on Saturday with 92 pairs, and they won all their matches comfortably in the round-robin stage with victories over Dulwich College 1, Marlborough College, Whitgift School 1 and St George’s School 2 to qualify for the main knockout draw of 32. Playing in the first round of the knockout against a pair from Leicester Grammar School, the boys produced some exceptional doubles teamwork on the clay, with another convincing 6-0, 6-2 win to reach the last 16.

Their success sadly came to an end as they battled against a highly talented doubles pair from Ewell Castle School. With a solid first service game from Max, it looked as though the boys were in with a chance, with some powerful hitting all round producing some exciting rallies in particularly tricky windy conditions. However, the attacking net play from the Ewell pair gave them the advantage, with the boys eventually losing 2-6, 1-6.

It was an exceptional performance from both boys, and they should be very proud of their achievements.

The Senior Boys Team of Leo S (Priestley House) Etienne H (Priestley House) Will C (Priestley House) and Max W (Weymouth House) reached Round Two of the Youll Cup U19 event with a great win over Royal Grammar School, Guildford, 2-1. Will and Leo won the deciding set after a draw in the first round of doubles with a fantastic display of teamwork.

The girls U15 pair of Xarina K (Cedars House) and Lucia T O (Winfield House) also had some good wins in their group over Epsom College 2, St Swithuns School 1 and Clifton College 1, finishing a respectable fourth place in their group.

Well done to all who played over the weekend – it was an excellent experience for all involved.
