Meet Ms Evie Kater, a EAL Teacher. We spoke to Ms Kater to learn more about her and her new role.
How long have you worked at the school?
I started my role in September 2023, but it feels like I’ve been at Mill Hill International for much longer! I’m finding the experience incredibly rewarding and feel truly welcomed by our school community and the staff.
What does your role involve?
I am part of the English Department, and my duties and responsibilities are primarily to deliver outstanding, engaging and stimulating English and EAL lessons to our international pupils. I’m also responsible for running the Young Interpreters programme for this academic year and I’m about to run a choir for some of our staff at MHI as I absolutely love music!
What is your favourite thing at the school?
It’s difficult to only choose one favourite thing about the school as it has so many benefits, but if I had to choose the most important one for me, I’d say that the sense of community we are experiencing here is unlike anywhere else I’ve worked before! It’s one of the greatest aspects that MHI has to offer to both pupils and staff.
Do you have any advice for our pupils which could help them to get the most out of their time at the school?
My advice would be to engage in all the different opportunities that the school has to offer including the wide range of co-curricular and social activities, school trips, competitions and events. It is an integral part of learning as well as developing the ‘whole child’ not only academically but on a personal level as well.
What is your favourite book and film for our pupils and why?
My favourite novella and film is ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens as it has a plethora of different themes and messages that students might find inspiring. For example, the importance of being kind, generous and considerate towards the less fortunate and vulnerable people.
Could you share an inspirational quote with us? How does it inspire you?
The quote that inspires me the most is ‘Luck is when opportunity meets preparation’ by Seneca who was a Roman and Stoic philosopher. It signifies the importance of being well-prepared in order to reach success and fulfil our aspirations rather than leaving everything to mere chance and luck.
Can you tell us something that we might not know about you?
One unexpected thing about me is that I used to be a Hip Hop dancer in Cyprus, and I absolutely loved it!
