Belmont has excellent sports facilities set in stunning, landscaped grounds. We have netball courts, rugby and football pitches, Astroturf for hockey, cricket squares (including artificial surfaces), tennis courts, a woodland cross-country course and a gymnasium. In addition we have regular use of Mill Hill, our senior school’s swimming pool, sports hall and larger Astroturf hockey pitch.
PE and Games have two very different purposes and the two hold equal value in the curriculum offer.
In PE lessons pupils have a generous time allocation of 90 minutes for Year 3&4s and 45 minutes for Years 5-8. All lessons are taught in co-educational mixed ability groups with pupils working on fundamental movement skills to improve their physical literacy. They will try a number of new activities whilst still participating in core swimming and fitness sessions, all tailored towards the ability of the pupil to identify and develop their personal skills and talents.
Games at Belmont is thriving, with over 50 teams playing in weekly matches and every child involved in a team appropriate for their ability. Pupils will receive two 90 minute Games lessons a week in Year 5-8 and one 90 minute lesson in Years 3&4. Typically one session a week the pupils will work on technical and tactical skills with a dedicated coach for their team and play fixtures in the other lesson. We play against local schools, as well as entering regional and national competition for all of our major sports. In the autumn term, girls will play hockey and boys rugby, whilst in the spring term, girls play netball and boys play football. In the summer term the whole school will focus on cricket and athletics. Belmont pupils are playing at County and Regional levels across a number of sports. We constantly encourage our pupils to join clubs outside school.
The Games department organise trips and tours throughout the school year and across different sports. There are weekend tours, European and international major tours, most recently to Antigua for Year 7 & 8 netball and cricket. All the tours and trips are open to all and not just particular team members.
