Science

The Science faculty is based in the Crick building, named after our Nobel Prize winning alumnus, and our pupils study the traditional three sciences of Chemistry, Physics and Biology, at least to GCSE. At A-level pupils can also study Psychology.

The subjects are taught separately throughout the school but, as a faculty, we work closely together and help our pupils to see the links between the different disciplines.

We have newly refurbished facilities dedicated to the individual teaching of the subjects: five Physics labs, four Chemistry labs, four Biology labs and one Psychology lab. These allow our pupils to master both the theoretical and experimental aspects of the subjects. We also aim for our pupils to see Science in action by encouraging them to visit research institutions such as CERN, or to see science being applied in the real life contexts like at hospitals.

In the Fourth Form, pupils begin GCSE Science courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The transition into GCSE for our pupils is smoothed by consolidating the skills of graph plotting, communication and problem solving. We also enhance their experimental skills of planning, investigating, analysing and evaluating.

At GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics are compulsory and pupils will follow either the AQA Combined Science: Trilogy course, which is taught as three separate subjects and leads to two separate GCSE qualifications in Science, or three distinct subjects in the AQA Separate Sciences courses, where they will get three GCSEs, one in each of the Sciences.

At A Level the Sciences are truly thriving at Mill Hill, with almost two thirds of our Sixth form taking one or more Science A Levels, and around a third of our leavers go onto to study Sciences, or related subjects, at university.
