A National Effort

As a country we are in the fortunate position of being home to an extraordinary wealth of experts – scientists, researchers, and academics – all at the forefront of their chosen fields. These are people who have dedicated their whole lives to studying, researching, and perfecting their knowledge of pandemics; knowledge that is now being applied to tackling COVID-19.

What might not have always been so obvious is that, alongside the experts, everyone has a crucial part to play in the fight against COVID-19. We have been urged by the government to stay at home, which will help to protect our National Health Service (NHS) and in turn save lives.

Some members of our School community have gone even further in the plight to protect the NHS. During the Easter holidays, we reported that Ms McInerey and Mr Brown designed, produced, and delivered protective visors to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Homerton Hospital. Their efforts have not stopped there, and we are proud to say that our protective visors have now reached frontline staff at Whipps Cross Hospital, London, Great Ormond Street Hospital, St Joseph’s Hospice and University College Hospital, London.

Our Head of EAL, Mr Pritchett, has also been highly active. Mr Pritchett is a member of the St John’s Ambulance (SJA) team. SJA members are often called upon to help the NHS in times of great need; usually driving ambulances but more recently, in these unprecedented times, to undertake hospital-based work.

In order to help on the front line, Mr Pritchett had to complete a COVID-19 Care course during the Easter holidays detailing patient care, correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and taking patient observations such as blood pressure and blood glucose within a hospital environment. It was a steep learning curve, but he learnt a lot about basic nursing and, since his training, has volunteered at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington.

If the past few weeks have shown us anything, it is that we are steadfast as a School in our resolve to help the national effort in any way we can.
