1729 Maths School: An Exciting First Half Term
It is hard to believe that we are already approaching the end of the first half term at 1729 Maths School! After several years of planning and preparation, September saw us welcome our founding cohorts of Year 7 and Year 9 students, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the life of the Mill Hill Education Group.
1729 was established with a simple but ambitious mission: to identify, nurture and develop world-class mathematical talent, giving exceptionally able young mathematicians the opportunity to explore their subject in greater depth and with greater freedom than is normally possible in a school curriculum. Our first few weeks have already provided a wonderful glimpse of what that might look like in practice.
Our students have thrown themselves into a programme which places mathematical exploration, creativity and rigorous reasoning at its heart. Rather than simply accelerating through conventional material, they are being encouraged to investigate unfamiliar problems, develop their own ideas, test conjectures and construct convincing mathematical arguments. The enthusiasm, curiosity and sheer mathematical ability on display have been remarkable. We have also been delighted to welcome visitors, including Dr Jamie Frost, founder of Dr Frost Maths, who was hugely impressed by the mathematical talent and enthusiasm he encountered.
Of course, 1729 is about much more than mathematics alone. Our students are also enjoying the enormous benefits of belonging to the wider Mill Hill community. Year 7 pupils are studying their non-mathematical subjects at Belmont, while Year 9 pupils are joining lessons and activities at Mill Hill. This partnership is fundamental to our vision: a highly specialised mathematical education combined with the breadth of opportunity, friendships and experiences that characterise a great all-round education.
Applications are now open for September 2027 entry into Years 7 and 9.
We would be enormously grateful if families across the Mill Hill community could help us spread the word. If you know a young person who is genuinely passionate about Mathematics, please encourage their family to find out more about 1729 and the admissions process.
We are immensely excited by what has already begun and look forward to sharing much more of the mathematical adventures ahead!
