A Thriving Term for the Combined Cadet Force

It was an exceptionally busy and rewarding term for the Combined Cadet Force, with cadets embracing a wide range of opportunities that combined service, tradition, adventure and teamwork. From ceremonial occasions to field training and community engagement, the breadth of activity was truly impressive.

The Corps of Drums marked VE Day with a memorable visit to a local residential community, where cadets paraded and performed traditional wartime songs. The commemoration continued on Albuhera Day, where cadets honoured the legacy of the Middlesex Regiment with a wreath-laying ceremony, musical performances and a moment of silence. The CCF also played a key role in the wider life of the school, supporting major events such as Induction Day, Foundation Day and Valedictory, while contributing to more informal occasions such as the Whole Hog festivities. The much-anticipated Beating Retreat once again showcased the very best of the Corps, as the Drum Corps led a ceremonial parade marking the transition of leadership to the next generation of cadets. Another highlight of the term was the Upper Sixth Mess Dinner, held at the historic Fusiliers Museum in the Tower of London. This special evening celebrated the commitment and contribution of our leavers, providing a fitting and memorable farewell as they approached their final examinations.

Beyond ceremony, cadets were also heavily involved in active and adventurous training. The Fourth Form Camp enabled new recruits to develop essential fieldcraft skills, resilience and independence, while Central Camp at Lydd provided a week of challenging and exciting activity, including live firing, adventurous training and inter-contingent competition. Service and charity also featured strongly, with cadets taking part in the Race for Life ‘Pretty Muddy’ event to raise money for Cancer Research UK, combining teamwork with a sense of purpose (and a good deal of mud).

Finally, a special mention must go to SLt Sayles, whose leadership throughout this busy period was instrumental in ensuring the continued success, energy and organisation of the CCF. Overall, it was a term defined by energy, commitment and camaraderie. The enthusiasm of our cadets and the dedication of the staff who supported them ensured that the CCF remained a cornerstone of the co-curricular provision.
