Career Events This Term
This term has been an inspiring and energising time for careers education across the Foundation. Our pupils have had the opportunity to hear from Old Millhillians, industry experts and university representatives, each offering valuable insight into the world beyond school. From small, discussion‑based sessions that encouraged thoughtful questions, to large‑scale events exploring pathways into competitive industries, these experiences have helped pupils broaden their horizons and begin thinking more confidently about their next steps.
Careers & Conversations
Over this half term, our Careers & Conversations series has given Sixth Form pupils the opportunity to explore a range of professions through discussions with returning Old Millhillians. We were delighted to welcome back Ollie Sander, James Barnett and Max McGee, who each spoke about their career paths and shared honest insights into their industries. The sessions were deliberately small and conversational, allowing pupils to ask questions freely and gain a deeper understanding of different career areas.
“I enjoyed throwing myself into a talk where I know very little, but the concept and ideas of the profession really resonated with me, especially the creative and problem-solving aspects.” Ella K, Atkinson, Lower Sixth
“I enjoyed the conversational aspect and the ability to ask questions in a smaller, more intimate environment. The speaker was engaging and offered helpful insight into the world of marketing, explaining both how to get into the field and the ins and outs of the industry.” Carl G, McClure, Lower Sixth
Pathways in Finance with Goldman Sachs
We were also delighted to welcome Old Millhillian Sasha B (Priestley, 2020–25) and Janine Glasenberg for our Pathways into Finance evening. More than 150 pupils and parents attended the event, which featured a fireside conversation hosted by Ellen Weaver, Foundation Careers Lead.
Throughout the evening, pupils and parents learned about the wide range of roles within the finance sector, what employers such as Goldman Sachs look for in applicants, the growing role of degree apprenticeships, and the steps students can take now to prepare for future opportunities.
Sasha spoke openly about her own journey from A Levels into a degree apprenticeship, giving pupils a realistic view of the challenges and rewards of working while learning. Janine provided valuable guidance on recruitment for both apprenticeships and graduate programmes, emphasising that the finance industry welcomes students from all academic backgrounds, whether humanities or STEM.
A key message from the event was that curiosity, engagement and taking advantage of school based opportunities are some of the best ways for young people to discover their interests and build essential transferable skills. Pupils left the event feeling inspired, informed and confident about the different pathways available to them.
Lunchtime Lecture: Maths x Finance with Morgan Stanley
We were pleased to welcome Lisa Zaferakis, Technical Programme Manager at Morgan Stanley and parent at the Foundation, for a Lunchtime Lecture delivered in collaboration with our Maths Department. Lisa spoke about her journey into finance after studying Mathematics at university, highlighting how mathematical study develops critical thinking, logical reasoning and problem-solving skills that are vital in the financial sector and many other industries. Her talk encouraged pupils to view mathematics not just as an academic subject, but as a powerful foundation for a wide range of career opportunities.
Looking ahead – School Careers Fair
As we look ahead to next term, we are pleased to share details of our upcoming Careers and Higher Education Fair, which will continue to build on this momentum and provide even more opportunities for pupils to explore the many possibilities available to them after school.
The Careers & Higher Education Fair is designed to help pupils explore future pathways, discover new opportunities and gain a deeper understanding of the many options available after secondary school.
This year’s fair will be our biggest yet, with more than 50 exhibitors joining us from universities and employers across the UK. Our visiting exhibitors will be available to share their experience, offer guidance and answer questions about study routes, career options and skills for the future.
With so many employers, universities and training providers all under one roof, this is an opportunity not to be missed. We encourage all students to attend, explore, ask questions and take the first steps towards exciting future possibilities.
