Careers
This half term has been an exciting one for Careers at Mill Hill with a packed calendar of lunchtime lectures, events with the Old Millhillians Club, and visits from international universities including Bocconi, NYU and USC. Alongside this, a major focus has been on individual careers advice and guidance meetings for Fifth Form pupils.
Over the course of the Autumn term, every one of our 177 Fifth Form pupils has had the opportunity to sit down for a dedicated 20-minute conversation with Miss Weaver, our Foundation Careers Lead. These meetings have provided a valuable space for pupils to explore their ambitions and begin shaping their plans for the future. Discussions have ranged from A Level subject choices and possible university courses to big-picture questions about the future of work, the importance of skills, and opportunities pupils can seize now.
The breadth of aspirations among our pupils is inspiring. Pupil ambitions have ranged from traditional fields such as finance, medicine and law to roles in creative arts, sport, fashion and even flight school. Each meeting has been followed up by a summary of the discussion and some individually targeted resources shared on Unifrog, helping pupils take the next step in turning their ambitions into reality.
Meeting individually with nearly 180 pupils is no small undertaking, but it is an investment that pays off. There is a great sense of reward to hearing a student pause at the end of a meeting and say, “Thank you, Miss, that was really useful.” Pupils have had a chance to give feedback on their meeting experiences and have mentioned varying ways that they found the meeting helpful - be that introducing them to new subject possibilities at university, giving clarity on their A Level choices or learning about what you can do now to start building a good portfolio of experiences. These conversations spark reflection and build confidence, laying the foundation for well-informed decision-making.
Though these short interactions are just one part of the Careers programme at Mill Hill, they are at the core of high-quality Careers education. In school, we can feel how these meetings are helping to foster a culture of career-readiness across the school, ensuring that every pupil feels supported as they begin to navigate the exciting journey ahead. We hope for those parents and guardians of Fifth Form pupils, you have been able to continue the positive conversations about future ambitions.
Looking ahead to Spring Term, we have an exciting calendar of events lined up for pupils to get involved in.
