Meet Edie W
For this week’s Meet the Pupil, we’re excited to introduce Edie who began her Mill Hill journey at Belmont in Year 3 and is now thriving in Year 13 at Mill Hill Sixth Form.
We caught up with Edie to hear about her experiences and leadership responsibilities at Mill Hill.
Tell us about yourself...
I am Edie W, and I joined Belmont in Year 3 so now 11 years ago! I spend most of my extra time playing sport both in and out of School whether that is Field Hockey or Athletics.
Have you ever taken on a leadership role in school, and what did you learn from the experience?
At the end of last year, I took on the role as Head Girl which has allowed me to expand my network beyond just the current Millhillians to meet past generations of Millhillians through Old Millhillian events and learn more about the School's history. It has also helped me to develop my public speaking skills and learn that leadership isn’t just about telling people to do things but rather listening and valuing everyone’s opinions.
Are you involved in any school clubs or societies?
I am a member of the first Hockey team which has been a particular highlight of my Mill Hill experience since Year 11as often it has been an escape from academics. The community that it has created and the friendships that I have made from it is something I will deeply treasure. Additionally, whilst it is neither a club nor a society, one of my favourite things to be a part of is Atkinson which has allowed me to compete in numerous house competitions throughout the years especially the Six Mile Cup which is my personal favourite. This year I am looking forward to being involved in House Drama!
What is your favourite subject and why?
I would struggle to pick between Biology and Geography for my favourite subject as parts of both deeply fascinate me. I love both my classes and the detailed discussions that we can have often beyond the curriculum.
Who is someone that you look up to and what do you admire about them?
I look up greatly to my mum. She is an amazing woman full of great advice and the support that she has offered me is something that I will be eternally grateful for. She has taught me to aim high and always have confidence in myself.
If you could give one piece of advice to younger pupils, what would it be?
If I could give one piece of advice that I wish I had received it would be this:
To live in the current moment because life doesn’t wait for you! You are the only person that you can control, and you cannot change what other people are doing only what you are doing.
How can younger pupils stay motivated, especially when school gets tough?
Find things to be excited for in the future, so that once you have got through the tough period you have a reward on the other side. It’s important to remember that the tough period will make things easier in the future. Also to make sure not to dwell too much on your mistakes, as nobody except you is likely to remember them.
