This week, we’re excited to introduce Maya D in Cedars House, who, like others in our Meet the Pupils series, has been part of the Mill Hill community since starting at Grimsdell, Mill Hill Pre Prep.

Now thriving in her final year at Mill Hill Sixth Form, Maya is set to complete her full Mill Hill Journey this year.

We caught up with her to reflect on her experiences, growth, and what this final academic year has been like for her.

Tell us about yourself…

Well, I've been at Mill Hill Schools for 15 years (I can't remember life without this school) and next year I'm set to start a Law degree. I really enjoy music and drama - maybe that's why I like musical theatre - and through my years at the school I've found my niche is in the CCF and Corps of Drums.

Finding that safe space has really helped me develop as a person, and teaching others has become a passion.

Have you ever taken on a leadership role in school, and what did you learn from that experience?

Currently, I am Head of House for Cedars, Drum Major and Head Chorister. Though admittedly quite stressful, my positions have taught me a lot about self-confidence. Leadership is daunting, but if you can encourage yourself to take a task on and at least put on a show of confidence, people are more likely to trust you.

Are you involved in any school clubs or societies? What do you enjoy most about them?

The Chapel Choir and the Corps of Drums - they might seem different, but they're both full of people who like to make A LOT of noise. The musical skills I've learned over the years from both have allowed me to develop so much as a musician, and the clubs have become an outlet for me to take a break from the stress of exams.

What is your favourite subject?

I enjoy all of my A-Levels, but my English class is my favourite. They aren't afraid to express their opinions (and criticise each other). I guess it's that environment that makes me look forward to every lesson!

Who is someone you look up to, and what do you admire about them?

Mr Kevin Kyle - the previous Director of Music Performance - was a massive mentor to me, both as a music teacher, and as a leader within the CCF. He encouraged me to back myself, supported me and held me to a high standard. He was also a friendly face, a person I could talk to about issues, and just a genuinely positive influence in my life.

If you could give one piece of advice to younger pupils in school, what would it be?

Never be afraid to try.

School is hard, that's a given, but if you just give up, you won't find the small joys, like friends or activities, that make the effort worth it.
