Mill Hill Pupils Excel in National Mathematics Competitions
This term has been an outstanding one for Sixth Form Mathematics at Mill Hill, with pupils competing successfully across a range of UKMT competitions.
Mathematical Competition and Olympiad for Girls
This year, UKMT launched the Mathematical Competition for Girls to run alongside the Olympiad round. We were delighted that eight pupils from Fifth Form to Upper Sixth volunteered to take part in this first and stretch themselves beyond the curriculum. In the competition, Rinko N achieved a Distinction in the competition, while Phoebe, Parul, Nadia, and Viktoria earned Merits—a fantastic achievement in a highly competitive field.
Only four pupils per school are permitted to compete in the Olympiad, and we congratulate Caroline, Tabitha, and Lia for their selection. Special recognition goes to Monica, who achieved the best result in school with a Merit. These results highlight the growing opportunities for girls in STEM at Mill Hill.
Senior Maths Challenge
The Senior Maths Challenge continues to grow in popularity at Mill Hill school, with an impressive 64 pupils taking part this year. Our pupils secured 49 awards, including 5 Golds and 20 Silvers, a testament to their problem-solving skills and dedication.
Congratulations to Jerry Z, who achieved Best in School despite being in Year 12, and to Jane D and Jonah G for topping their respective year groups. Three other pupils—Daniel K, Henry M, and Alexi C—qualified for the Senior Kangaroo, while Jerry progressed to the formidable British Mathematical Olympiad, a 3.5-hour challenge reserved for the UK’s top mathematicians. We eagerly await their results.
Senior Team Maths Challenge
Mathematics is not only about individual brilliance but also collaboration. Four Lower Sixth pupils—Henry M, Rinko N, Tito S, and Alex G N—represented Mill Hill at the Senior Team Maths Challenge Regional Final at The Leys. Competing in four demanding rounds, including a mathematical relay and a Crossnumber, the team scored an impressive 59/60 in the latter. They finished 15th overall, gaining invaluable experience and demonstrating the teamwork and resilience that define Mill Hill pupils.
Thanks go to Mr Amellal for preparing, guiding and taking the pupils to Cambridge for the Senior Team Maths Competition and Mrs Lister for her work in running all the individual competitions.
Next term, it will be the turn of Lower School mathematicians with their own individual (Intermediate Maths Challenge) and team (Maths Feast and Team Maths Challenge) competitions and we look forward to them repeating this success.
