Sport Highlights

Hockey – Mr Stevens, Head of Hockey

Hockey at Mill Hill continues to develop, with growing participation and an expanding range of opportunities for pupils. The Mill Hill Hockey Academy has seen excellent numbers attending Friday after-school sessions, alongside increasing demand for individual 1-to-1 coaching with our expert coaches. Newly introduced before-school skills sessions have also proved extremely popular, with places quickly filling up.Another exciting addition has been boys' hockey within the Fourth Form Core PE programme, giving all boys in the year group a three-week introduction to the sport ahead of the spring term hockey season.

The biggest development this half term has been the announcement of our official partnership with Southgate Hockey Club. Bringing together two long-established North London sporting organisations, this partnership will strengthen the pathway from school to club hockey, creating exciting opportunities for talented young players.

Our shared ambition is to establish the Mill Hill Foundation as a destination for aspiring county, national and international hockey players, while continuing to broaden participation and support young people through sport. With increasing engagement, additional coaching opportunities and an exciting new partnership, the future of Mill Hill Hockey looks extremely promising.

Rugby – Mr Heppner-Logan, MiC Rugby

Mill Hill Rugby has enjoyed an outstanding half term, with up to 12 teams regularly competing in Saturday fixtures against some of the country's leading rugby schools, including Uppingham, Haileybury and St Albans.

The U14B team has been particularly impressive, remaining unbeaten with five wins from five matches and scoring 235 points. Our senior sides have also excelled, with the 1st XV, 2nd XV and 3rd XV all unbeaten in their Saturday fixtures. Highlights for the 1st XV include a thrilling 51–35 victory over Northampton School for Boys, last season's National Cup winners, and an emphatic 54–12 win over Hampton School on Topfield to progress to Round 3 of the Continental Tyres U18 Schools Cup. The squad also reached the Shield Final at the prestigious Merchiston Castle Festival, narrowly missing out on silverware. Special recognition goes to captain Ollie Barriball and vice-captain Charlie Morgan for their excellent leadership.

Our U15s have also progressed in the National Cup, defeating St Benedict's 22–14 to set up a Round 2 encounter with St Paul's School.

An exciting development has been the introduction of girls' rugby into the Fourth Form Core PE programme, providing every girl in the year group with an introduction to the sport. We hope this will encourage more pupils to join Ms Lancaster's weekly Girls' Rugby Club, building on the success of our U18 Girls' Sevens team, who reached the second day of the Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens last year.

Looking ahead, we are particularly excited for The Big Game at StoneX Stadium on Saturday 14 November, when Mill Hill face Finborough School, with the match also streamed live by NextGenXV.

Netball – Ms Hall, Head of Netball

Netball has enjoyed an excellent start to the academic year, with both the U15s and 1st VII progressing to Round 2 of the National Cup. Our U14 and U15 teams have also secured places in the Middlesex County Finals, reflecting the strength and depth of netball across the School.

Individual success has been equally impressive, with nine pupils selected for Netball Super League performance academies, including London Mavericks and London Pulse. These achievements are a fantastic reflection of the commitment and talent within our netball programme.

Eton Fives – Mr Plummer, Foundation Head of Fives

Eton Fives has enjoyed a busy and successful half term, with fixtures against QEB, Highgate and Harrow involving teams across several age groups. The commitment of our players has been particularly pleasing, with pupils regularly attending lunchtime and after-school training sessions.

A highlight was the Summers Cup on Sunday 20 September, which brought together current pupils and Old Millhillians for a friendly but competitive round-robin tournament. Ten pairs participated, with plenty of parental support, making it a fantastic occasion for the wider Mill Hill community.

Special recognition goes to our senior players, L. Namey, G. Griffiths, A. Diracles, A. Terry, D. North and L. Doukaki, who represented the School superbly throughout the event. Their sportsmanship, maturity and positive engagement with Old Millhillians reflected the values and character we aim to develop through sport at Mill Hill.

Football – Mr Lewis, Head of Football

Football at Mill Hill has enjoyed an exciting and competitive start to the academic year, with some excellent performances across both our boys' and girls' teams.

The 1st XI have progressed to Round 2 of the ISFA National Trophy following an impressive 3–0 home victory over Princethorpe. Despite a challenging fixture schedule, the squad have shown excellent commitment and continued development throughout the half term.

Our U15 Boys have also made a strong start, securing a convincing victory over a competitive Dunottar side on Memorial. Under the guidance of Mr Whitley, the team continue to develop through their weekly training sessions and eagerly await the next round of their cup competition.

In girls' football, our U18 Girls begin their national Shield campaign against New Hall, providing another fantastic opportunity to showcase their progress under Mr Downs. Meanwhile, the U15 Girls produced a determined performance against Wren Academy in the County Cup, narrowly trailing until the closing stages before conceding a second goal while pushing for an equaliser.

With strong performances, growing opportunities and exciting cup competitions ahead, there is plenty to look forward to for Mill Hill Football in the second half of term.
