Spring Term Academic Highlights

Once again, Mill Hill pupils have soared to impressive academic heights beyond the classroom. This Spring Term has been filled with enriching trips for a wide variety of pupils and disciplines along with masterclasses and academic competitions.

We were delighted in particular to welcome a number of distinguished visiting speakers including Dr Tyler Horton from the University of Cambridge School of Divinity who explored topics ranging from biblical interpretation to the theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer and finally the concept of miracles and esteemed historian Dr Michael Lynch who explored themes of Stalinist Russia with our A Level pupils.

Our pupils also continued Mill Hill’s proud tradition of debating success. A young and dynamic team reached the regional stage of the ESU Schools’ Debating Competition and the School was honoured to take part in Harrow School’s inaugural Nehru Cup. Special congratulations go to Barun L. who ranked among the top ten debaters on the day.

In the arts, French scholars and pupils staged a short devised piece at Tonbridge School’s French Drama Festival delivering a highly praised performance of Le Prénom.

Pupils once again achieved strong results across a range of national Olympiad competitions. An impressive five Fifth Form chemists earned Gold Awards in the recent Junior Chemistry Olympiad with many others securing Silver and Copper Awards. Additionally twelve Remove pupils successfully attained their Crest Science Award. Economists also enjoyed notable success with eleven pupils gaining awards in their national Olympiad. In Maths nine pupils reached the Olympiad Kangaroo level with Leo O. and Arnav P. achieving Best in School. Finally around twenty five Physics scholars secured a broad range of Gold Silver and Bronze awards in their competitions. Congratulations all round for these excellent achievements.

Two standout events this term were the ever popular Science Week which was bigger bolder and more ambitious than ever and the greatly anticipated return of our French Exchange with our partner school in Rouen the École Jean Paul II.

Science Week

This year’s Science Week was a spectacular celebration of scientific curiosity and discovery across the School. Throughout the week pupils immersed themselves in hands on learning across all three sciences.

Biologists explored human anatomy through VR headsets and conducted DNA extractions while Chemists investigated molecular models and bonding. Houses competed fiercely in the Top of the Bench competition with School House emerging triumphant and the atmosphere was as lively as the challenges themselves. In Physics pupils tackled a range of engaging experiments in the Physics Extravaganza and applied their knowledge to crack the codes of a science themed Escape Room.

The much loved Biobakes competition returned with some astonishingly realistic “Is it cake?” creations and the Department once again welcomed newly hatched ducklings which remain a perennial highlight for pupils and staff alike. Members of the Science Department joined by Lower Sixth pupils also led an inspiring Women in Science activity day at Lyonsdown School in celebration of International Women’s Day.

Huge thanks go to the entire Science Department for delivering an unforgettable week of learning discovery and enthusiasm.
