The Martlet Programme and Pupil Voice

The Martlet Programme

Our historic Fourth Form Martlet Programme has taken a fresh approach this year. Informed by last year’s pupil feedback and the rapidly changing technological landscape, we have placed a particular emphasis on clear, confident and concise communication.

This half term, pupils have explored what makes a speech powerful. The words themselves, but also the nuance, tone, pace and pauses that bring them to life. Through House-based workshops, they have practised speaking in front of their peers, learning that nerves are natural and that it is perfectly fine to pause and collect your thoughts.

The sessions culminated in the Martlet Oracy Prize last Friday, with 12 performances in the Theatre featuring speeches by figures ranging from Elizabeth I and Roosevelt to Malala and Obama. The reception was truly Millhillian. Friends cheered on their fellow Housemates, and each performer stepped up to the lectern, spotlight centred, with the audience firmly behind them. Pupils put their learning into practice, using vocal contrast, thoughtful pacing and confident delivery to hold the room. Congratulations to Sammy (Winfield) who took the top prize, and to every pupil who performed to their year group – it takes a huge about of courage and ambition.

Next half term, our focus turns to Careers and AI, continuing to help pupils develop the skills and confidence to navigate the changing world we are living in.

Pupil Voice

The Crick Room was booked and Pupil Voice badges were at the ready for our first meeting last Thursday. Bringing together pupils from every House and year group, these meetings are an energising opportunity to hear about school life and explore ideas across academic, pastoral and co-curricular matters.

This meeting focused on how we celebrate pupils’ achievements and recognise their contributions, alongside planning assemblies and lessons for Anti-Bullying Week in November. Feedback gathered from tutor groups across the school helped shape the discussion and will continue to inform future agendas, allowing every pupil to contribute.

Working with pupils in decision-making is central to our ethos. Their day-to-day experiences help us understand what is working well and where we can improve. By listening carefully, discussing ideas openly and making changes where we can, we strengthen pupils’ sense of belonging and help build a community in which they feel heard, valued and safe.
