This week in Year 1…

This week in Literacy the children continued to focus on the text ‘Can you catch a Mermaid’ and wrote a character description of Freya. They created a missing poster of Freya using descriptive words in their sentences to describe her features and her behaviour.

The children have been looking forward to their trip to Southend on Sea for some time and at last, the day arrived when they departed with their packed lunches. On arrival and after a little water and biscuit break, the children explored the ‘zooaquarium’ exploring underwater species, as well as the land animals, putting their knowledge to the test! The children had their picnic lunch on the waterfront taking in the sea view and fresh air followed by an ice cream treat. The children enjoyed playing in the sand making sandcastles with their buckets and spades and some children even made an outline of a mermaid using the natural objects found on the sandy beach. The weather behaved itself and as result, the children had a great day in all. Exhausted by the fun-filled day, the return journey back to school was quiet as most children fell asleep!

The following day the children had a choice of which format they wished to record their recount of the trip to Southend on Sea. They had a choice of creating a poster with selective photos, using their iPads to recount the events of the trip by choosing photos from the album to create a movie using the iMovie app or writing a recount and sequencing the day.
