This week in Year 1…

This week in Year One we introduced a new type of poem to the children, a Kennings poem. Rail follower, coal stoker, firebox burner, passenger carrier were all wonderful descriptions children produced that contain the suffix -er.  We’ve been reflecting on everything we have learnt on trains over the past few weeks to think of descriptive sentences and then how they could refine and improve their writing. Mother’s Day is approaching so without giving away the surprise, children have been thoughtful and creative this week.

In math the focus has aligned with our focus on trains to begin to learn about telling the time to o’clock, half-past and even quarter to and past. Children identified clock faces, train schedules and arriving and departing times.
