The simplicity and joy of giving

Hot on the heels of a number of charitable events at Grimsdell I found myself today witnessing another charitable initiative with a bit of a difference.

This year our Parents’ Association have embarked on a brand new project which is to provide Christmas gifts for The Children’s Ward at Barnet Hospital. The children entered school this morning, each with a gift to add to the box and they placed them with a sense of pride and joy. We soon ran out of space and before we knew it there were several large boxes filled with beautiful and thoughtful gifts for children who will have to spend their Christmas in hospital.

Perhaps it was the connection with Christmas or the fact that activity was focussed on giving something they would like to receive themselves that made such a strong impact on the children. Or perhaps it was the fact that we have embraced charity and the act of giving so extensively this term, but I certainly felt a strong sense of kindness and empathy coming from the children as they made their donations.

We want to spark a natural glow within our children when they do something for others so that this supersedes that small thrill we might feel when we receive something. Our work on this is ongoing and we hope to breed kindness as long-lasting traits in all our children through these activities and of course our general ethos and interactions.

I hope you enjoy our pictures from the morning!
