Our Lower Sixth, Computer Science, ICT and Design and Technology pupils had the opportunity to learn about how unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or ‘drones’ are being used to deliver medicines to remote areas in Africa.
The talk was delivered by Daniel Ronen, a Chartered Engineer and the co-founder of UAVaid Ltd. UAVaid was founded in 2014 with the goal of developing ‘drones’ to help solve some of the logistics and access challenges faced by communities in remote and difficult to reach areas of the developing world. This also includes those suffering in the aftermath of large scale natural disasters. The company is based in the UK and their drones have flown in both Europe and Africa. In Malawi they made the country’s first ever delivery by drone parachute and in Sierra Leone they completed the nation’s first ever medical drone delivery.
With many students considering their future options after they complete their exams, the talk touched on how a range of different subjects, such as Design & Technology, Anthropology, Geography and Computer Science each play their part in understanding complex problems and helping to create innovations, such as drones, to solve them. As well as the session being interactive, the pupils saw videos and had the opportunity to ask questions.
This was a unique opportunity for our pupils, where they gained exposure to a company which uses innovation and technology to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems. Pupils left the talk feeling inspired and with a broader understanding of some career possibilities in the future.
