A sense of History

This week I was paid a visit by the former Head of Belmont, Mrs Lynn Duncan, who enjoyed seeing all the changes to the school that have taken place over the last few years.

Generations of Old Belmontians

It has been a week where history, reflection and looking back have been recurring themes. Following Grandparents’ Day last week, one kind Old Belmontian grandfather sent me some details of his family’s history at Belmont. Incredibly, the connection to Belmont goes back almost 100 years with a current pupil’s great-grandfather attending the school in the 1920s. A grand total of 16 pupils attended Belmont all connected to the same family, spanning over 4 generations. I have attached some pictures that the grandparent shared that you may find of interest. The first one is of the grandparent during his time at Belmont working hard at his French homework, with dip pen and blotting paper.

I have also attached a photo of Margaret and Denis Thatcher attending a gym display on the Master’s Lawn in the summer of 1964 as their son Mark also attended Belmont at the same time as the grandparent.

If there are any other Old Belmontians out there who want to share their memories or send in some pictures then we’d love to hear from you.

Black History Month

During Monday’s assembly we talked to the children about Black History Month. I say we; it was in fact some of our Year 8 pupils, led by Toluwani who had asked if she could present a special assembly. The children learned about influential black figures in history who they may have not heard about before. From Walter Tull, a professional footballer and British Army officer killed in the First World War, to writer and abolitionist, Oulaudah Equiano. It was fantastic for all the children to learn about some lesser-known figures, how they were able to have an influence on the course of history and it was also great that it came from our Year 8 pupils.

Harvest Festival

Thank you to all the families who donated to the Harvest collection in aid of Homeless Action in Barnet. During Chapel on Wednesday, the children heard from Miss Gimpel and a representative from Homeless Action in Barnet about how the goods were going to help some local people in need of support. The representative was blown away by your generosity that is going to make a real difference, so thank you.

Best wishes,

Leon Roberts
