Year 5 Drama, Computational Thinking Challenge and Climbing the Walls …

Dear Parents,

I hope you’ve all had a wonderful week. It has been very busy here at Belmont with four more days of 11+ Assessments.

In addition we have had two more parents’ evenings this week, some brilliant Year 6 Chapel performances and yesterday afternoon I had the privilege of watching the Year 5 plays. I was just astonished by the quality of the performance. It is incredible how much these children have grown since Year 3, both in size and levels of confidence. The children were all amazing; clearly expressing themselves with good volume, demonstrating great comedic timing (whether intentional or not) and some great acting. The singing was magnificent and a couple of songs in particular had the audience struggling to keep their eyes dry. I never imagined that Celine Dion’s ‘My Heart Will Go On’, from Titanic could turn me into an emotional wreck. I am definitely getting soft in my old age! I just felt so proud of all the children; they were a great team and every single pupil looked like they thoroughly enjoyed the occasion. I’d like to thank and congratulate the Year 5 team and the Music department for really inspiring the children.

For the first time many of our pupils from Year 5 to 8 entered the UK Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge. 25 students achieved in the top 10% in the country for their age group. They have been invited to the next stage during the week of 4th March 2019.

Dele Kole top scored in the school with a massive 156/200 and just missed out by two marks on the final round at Oxford University, which would have put him in the region of the top 0.1% in the country for his age group.

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend. It is my eldest daughter’s 9th birthday this weekend so I’ll be helping to supervise a climbing party. This will be completely new to me as we are unaccustomed to children ‘climbing the walls’ at Belmont. However, it may give me some useful insight into choosing the climbing wall that we hope to have as part of our new sports hall.

Best wishes,

Leon Roberts, Head
