Head’s blog
I hope you’ve had an enjoyable shorter week and that your bank holiday weekend was a welcome break. We have had a huge amount of artistic and creative activities taking place over the last week or so.
Tate Modern
At the end of last week Year 7 visited the Tate Modern and had their very own private viewing of the Pierre Bonnard exhibition. The children thoroughly enjoyed their special day:
Thanks to Mr McNulty for organising and to Mr Goldin for making this special day possible.
It has also been a hive of activity this week in the art room. Year 6 have been making some clay Keith Haring inspired characters, Year 8 have been creating flowers to be sold by the FOB at B-Fest and
The Art Scholarship group have developed a negative space idea using clay. The clay pieces will be fired in the new kiln, and finally pieces will be decorated using paint or glaze. The children at Belmont are very keen and enthusiastic potters!
Belmont Designers
On Thursday the Design & Technology department had its first Year 6 Designers’ Day with pupils from St John’s and Goodwyn School joining our own children for the event. Our visiting designer for the day was Lionel Correya from j-me Original Design (www.j-me.com), who spoke to the children about his career and his early influences.
Pupils then broke off into 2 workshops where the children could develop their own creativity and, in teams of 4, produce mock-ups and models for a bottle and packaging design for a new perfume or cologne. The children worked well and embraced the challenge and really impressed Lionel with their passion and ability in the subject.
Well done to all the students involved and a big thank you to Mr Warden and the staff who helped make the day possible.
Year 8 pupil Ishani has been doing some extra design work in her own time. Her 3D board game Bunny Hop was incredibly complex and sophisticated in its design.
STEM juniors
The Jaguar Challenge regional finals were held on Tuesday in Reading. Two Year 6 teams from Belmont made it through:
Part of the process included a talk about the production of their car, how they came up with their team name and logo, making a pit display, analysing tyre pressure and finally racing the cars they had produced.
The Rebel Racers won a trophy for ‘Best Pit Display’ and The Aero Taches won a trophy for 3rd place in the competition.
Thank you to Mrs Caldwell for organising the event.
Finally, some of our younger pupils were putting their design skills into action during lunchtime on the grounds today creating a range of bug hotels. They were having a great time!

I hope the sun shines for our cricket festivals tomorrow and that you all have a lovely weekend.
Best wishes,
