Football League Report

With 27 pupils signed up, the MHI Football League has proven to be the most popular of the co-curricular activities on offer this term. Whilst the recent poor weather forced a change of venue midway through, from the grass pitch to the basketball courts, it did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm or competitive spirit of the players. After the initial trials, held at the start of term, four reasonably evenly matched squads were assembled, their respective names inspired by iconic MHI locations:

Inter Millin

Real MacGregor

Parkfield Rovers

Wren Wanderers

Each squad contained 6 or 7 players with 5 allowed on pitch at any one time. We adopted a league structure with everybody playing everyone else twice, making 6 games in all. There were some blockbuster performances along the way: Ivan V’s 4 goals in one game and Sam B’s heroic goalkeeping to name but two. Deborah O also deserves credit for leading her team with a never-say-die attitude despite their struggles against slightly stronger opposition. In the end it came down to the finest of margins – when points amassed and goal difference couldn’t separate the top two, the title was decided by goals scored with Parkfield Rovers edging out Wren Wanderers by just 4 goals to claim the glory. Ivan V won the coveted golden boat by scoring double the number of goals of his closest rival and, aside from one week when temperatures perhaps rose a little too high, the matches were played in an excellent spirit!

The plan is to do it all over again next term but with new squads and team names after another round of trials in January. The World Cup in Qatar may have had the worldwide exposure but for sheer excitement, the MHI Football League takes the prize!

Winners: Parkfield Rovers – Amir S; Hunayn S; Kiarash K; Giulio A; Max M; Anson C
